The US-based international oil company Chevron Bangladesh, which is engaged in oil and gas exploration and development in Bangladesh, has recently received a news that they are preparing to move into an illegal building, which is Invalid by the Supreme Court according to a reliable source.

The source further said that Chevron Bangladesh Company is going to a building named Gulshan Center Point in the next two to three months which is controversial and unapproved, which has already been reported in various newspapers.

Furthermore, the Capital Development Authority (RAJUK), Department of Environment, Civil Aviation, Fire Service and other authorities have not given permission for this building.

According to experts, Chevron, as Bangladesh's largest foreign investor and largest gas producer, is currently producing natural gas from three gas fields in the northeast part of the country.

If Chevron's head office faces any temporarily disruption, gas production in Bangladesh could be disrupted at the same time. Many other sectors may face difficulties too including power generation, gas dependent industries, residential sectors, etc. if the gas production is disrupted.

This could threaten the country's energy sector as well as the government’s reputation. In this regard, the Capital Development Authority (RAJUK) said that this building is unapproved and also there is no approval to use it for any business or commercial purposes.

The land, however, is earmarked in the master plan of RAJUK to use as public facilities. Construction of a multi-storied building requires permission from the Department of the Environment, which, when contacted, said it had not been given any permission to use for any multi-storied or commercial building.

Another source informed, Anti Corruption Commission already started investigation on different faults and irregularities on this building. Experts suggested better to avoid doing office or commercial activities in this building for all the litigations.
