State Minister for Public Administration Farhad Hossain has said that some restrictions may continue during the upcoming Eid-ul-Azha holidays.

However, the decision will be taken after monitoring Covid-19 situation during the ongoing 14-day lockdown, the minister told the media on Monday.

“Some restrictions must continue during the holidays because we noticed Covid-19 infections spiked after the last Eid holidays as people rushed to go back home flouting health guidelines," he said.

The government may ask people to celebrate Eid at their respective locations, he added.

Regarding the cattle markets, the minister said more emphasis will be on the digital cattle markets this year.

Meanwhile, the government on Monday extended the ongoing strict Covid-19 restrictions by seven more days to choke the upsurge of virus cases and fatalities.

The Cabinet Division issued a gazette notification, extending the restrictions until July 14 midnight.

Bangladesh on Monday recorded its highest-ever daily coronavirus cases and fatalities in a 24-hour period. The health authorities confirmed 9,964 new cases and 164 deaths from the virus.

The latest fatalities pushed the national tally to 15,229 while the number of total confirmed cases stands at 9,54,881.
