Abdur Rahman Badi is one of the most talked about and criticized people in the country including Cox's Bazar. He is a former MP from Teknaf.

He was not nominated in the last parliamentary elections due to allegations of patronage of drug traffickers. Instead, his wife Shahin Akhter Chowdhury was nominated by the ruling party Awami League. Even then, the locals complained that Badi did not come under control.

They say that Badi and his family and followers were close friends of former Teknaf police OC Pradeep Kumar Das and his associates.With the indulgence of Badi and the people of his circle, OC Pradeep became reckless.

The controversial police officer was involved in various misdeeds including killing innocent people in the name of crossfire and framing them with false drug cases without getting the required amount of money. Locals further say that the victims at the hands of Pradeep and his associates went to the present and former MPs of Teknaf but did not get any remedy. They would not even show those victims. And due to the friendship of OC Pradeep, even though there were allegations of drug dealing against Badir's relatives and followers,

the Teknaf police could not go near them. Even a few months ago, Badin's wife MP Shahin Akter even sent a DO letter (semi-official letter) to the Home Ministry and the district police superintendent to stop Pradeep's transfer. However, former MP Badi and his wife, current MP Shaheen Akhter,

have denied allegations of indulging in OC Pradeep, saying those who are working for terrorists and drug traffickers are carrying out such propaganda. They both claim that they are fighting against drugs. Speaking to people from different walks of life in Teknaf, it is learned that a special anti-drug campaign was launched on May 4, 2016 at the behest of the Prime Minister;

The operation was carried out in Cox's Bazar-Teknaf and Ukhia. One drug smuggler after another was killed in an alleged gunfight with the RAB-police. Panic spread in the area. However, in some cases, small traders have been punished and harassed, but the big cycles involved in the supply and sale of yaba have continued unabated.
