Corruption case against "PWD" engineer and his wife

The Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) on Wednesday filed two separate cases against Additional Chief Engineer of the Public Works Department Utpal Kumar Dey and his wife Gopa.

Mohammad Neyamul Ahsan Gazi, assistant director of the ACC head office, filed two cases at the commission's integrated district office (Sajeka) Dhaka-1 in the case, Gopa has been accused of having Tk 8 crore 82 lakh 7 thousand and Utpal Kumar has been accused of having known non-income assets of Tk 1 crore 18 lakh 17 thousand.

Controversial contractor Golam Kibria (GK) has been accused of colluding with Shamim to acquire these assets through abuse of power and bribery. Her husband Utpal Kumar has also been accused in the case against Gopa.

The case against the Gopas states,‘The accused have malicious intent 6 crore 82 lakh 8 thousand 754 tk through corruption Acquired illegal assets inconsistent with known income,

They have committed punishable offenses under the Money Laundering Act 2012 and the ACC Act 2004 by converting, transferring and handing over these assets at different times with the nefarious intention of keeping them in their possession.

The statement further said, ‘Gopas have transacted huge amount of money as various banks.

After reviewing the evidence and other surrounding facts, it is initially found that Gopa Dey and her husband Utpal Kumar Dey have amassed this wealth through corruption.

Similarly, in the case filed against Utpal Kumar, it has been said, ‘Becoming a government employee through malpractice, corruption and various illegal activities,Acquired assets of 1 crore 16 lakh 18 thousand 903 taka which is inconsistent with the known income,

He has committed a crime under the ACC Act 2004 and Money Laundering Act by possessing illegally acquired assets.The statement further said that no specific source of legitimate income was found in the assets acquired by Utpal Kumar except his salary. In fact, as a government employee, he has acquired ownership of ill-gotten wealth through corruption.
