People from different walks of life waged demonstrations on the road in front of the Jatiya Sangsad Bhaban this afternoon, protesting the surge in rape incidents in the country and demanding exemplary punishment for rapists.

The protesters, under the banner of 'Feminist X Generations', an independent women's rights organisation, started the demonstration at around 4:00pm on the road in front of Jatiya Sangsad. Several others organisations also took part in the event.

Holding placards, the protesters chanted various slogans condemning the long standing culture of impunity in the country and demanded prompt action to put an end to incidents of rape.

The demonstrators said they took to the streets to raise voice against the patriarchy and violence against women.

Stressing the need for imparting education to end violence against women, protestors said families, as well as the government, have to come forward in this regard.

They underscored the need for ensuring punishment of rapists and ending the prevailing culture of victim-blaming.
